Each of the visitors CNT´s stand at the Majales could try out tasks with a nanoscience theme and compete for a unique nanodrink

On 17 May a Majales organized by the initiative of the students' union took place in the premises of the Silesian Ostrava Castle.

Since this event is organized by students of VSB-TUO and Ostrava University for young people and its aim is not only to have fun, but also to learn something new, we decided that with the Nanotechnology Centre we will give visitors as much as possible from this field of science.

Although it may seem difficult to bring nanotechnology to the general public, the opposite is true. We have been ingenious and have prepared several competitions for the visitors and for completing them they could get a gift in the form of a Waterdrop microdrink full of fresh energy.
This great student event is traditionally attended by people across all age categories, so we chose the composition of the competition tasks accordingly.

At the CNT stand visitors could find for example:
THE MAGIC SURFACE - where they guessed whether it was a surface treated with a special water-repellent nano-additive.
GUESS THE NANOMATERIALS - When they guessed from samples of commonly used products whether they contained nanoparticles (for example, in sunscreen, flour, flavoring, cracker, shoe polish, etc.)... How would you answer?
NANOSCIENCE MATCHING CARDS - A form of game where contestants tried to line up three pictures belonging together, where one picture depicted a plant or animal, the next picture taken was an electron microscope shot, and the last picture depicted a phenomenon or use of the material, e.g. (1) thistle - (2) a picture of its spiny leaf ends under an electron microscope - (3) looks similar to Velcro.

In the words of Dr Holešová, the event was more than a success: „I have to say that the reactions really surprised me, people were really interested in nanotechnology, and not just the younger ones. They had a lot of questions or, on the contrary, they shared their own experiences. In the end, they were able to mix a refreshing microdrink Waterdrop for completing the tasks. It's just a pity that the weather wasn't in our favor, I think that if it had been nice, the turnout would have been even bigger. But I still think the event was a great success.“

There were also other demonstrations which you can see if you come and visit us at other events. CNT will be attending the following events, such as Chemistry at the Castle on June 25, 2024
