Title
CLear AIR and Climate Adaptation in Ostrava and other cities
Code
UIA03-123
Summary
Despite restructuring of the industry and numerous effective measures taken to improve the air quality in Ostrava, the air pollution remains one of the city’s biggest environmental problems. The key objective of CLAIRO is to gradually and systematically decrease air pollution through comprehensive planning and planting of municipal greenery with proved positive impact to air quality, based on accurate measurement, evaluated data, innovative solutions, involvement of experts from different sectors, shared knowledge and transfer to other cities. Given the complexity of air pollution issue, the topic is approached on the whole agglomeration level otherwise real improvement cannot be reached. 4 innovative features include: 1. Application of the innovative methodology designing city greenery in the most efficient structure and composition. 2. Application of the new generation of sensors that allow fast, short-term measurements of both organic and inorganic substances. 3. Strengthening the resistance of the plants through new phytohormones and biostimulants. 4. Identification and share of new solutions in the field of plants with evidence-based impact to air quality. As result of the project, the air quality in the most polluted district of Ostrava (Radvanice and Bartovice) will increase and Ostrava will create a living lab of urban greenery to provide long-term information on air quality improvement based on green solutions for the whole agglomeration and cities in Europe.
