FAIR data and open science in practice – young researchers learn to work with the ZENODO repository

9. 7. 2025 News
As part of the INOVO citizen science project, we organized a workshop focused on implementing FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) into research practice. The workshop was led by Tomáš Heryán, INOVO project data manager and CEET data steward.
FAIR data and open science in practice – young researchers learn to work with the ZENODO repository

“Our goal was to introduce these principles to PhD students and young researchers outside the project through practical demonstrations and working with data,” said Tomáš Heryán.

Participants tried out the following on their own computers:

  • how to properly structure and secure research data against misuse during the review process,
  • how to create a clear and machine-readable ReadMe file that will allow the data to be used not only by other researchers, but also by artificial intelligence-based analytical tools that will soon be available on the ZENODO platform.

Why FAIR principles and Open Science?

Science is changing rapidly – and with it, the approach to knowledge sharing. Open science strives for transparency, repeatability, and accessibility of results across disciplines and society. FAIR principles specifically define how research data should be prepared to be:

  • Findable: provided with metadata and unique identifiers,
  • Accessible: available under clearly defined conditions,
  • Interoperable: readable by humans and machines across different platforms,
  • Reusable: clearly documented with licenses and provenance.

Applying these principles contributes to the quality of scientific work, facilitates international cooperation, and ensures that publicly funded research truly serves society as a whole—including public engagement through citizen science.

We would like to thank all workshop participants for their active involvement and look forward to further joint steps towards more open and transparent science!

The project “Innovative technologies for a cleaner Ostrava region!!!” (INOVO!!!, reg. no. CZ.02.01.01/00/23_021/0008588) was created within the framework of the Jan Amos Komenský Operational Program (OP JAK), call: Cross-sectoral cooperation and cross-sectoral cooperation for ITI, and is implemented with financial support from the European Structural and Investment Funds.
