Colleagues from university in Peru visited Laboratory of preparation of nanostructured materials

The Institute of Environmental Technology was visited by researchers Dr. Gerardo Cruz and Mr. John Rimaycuna from the National University of Tumbes in northern Peru as part of a one-month internship.

In the framework of the solution of research projects Synthesis of carbon quantum dots from agro-industrial residual biomass by hydrothermal carbonization and adsorbents production by microwaves, with technical characteristics suitable for use in the transport of biomolecules and IET - Excellent research they visited the partner Laboratory of Preparation of Nanostructured Materials under the leadership of Dr. Lenka Matějová.

They used equipment from large research infrastructure ENREGAT for the synthesis of carbonaceous quantum dots by unique hydrothermal processing in flow mode, as well as for the preparation of biochar and activated carbon from banana waste by microwave pyrolysis. They also used the extensive analytical background of IET for characterization of prepared materials and other products. Hydrothermal processing of banana waste, biochar from banana waste or chitosan in flow mode led to carbonaceous quantum dots dispersed in an aqueous solution after only 1 hour of the experiment. In this area of cooperation they closely cooperated in the laboratory with Dr. Lenka Matějová and Dr. Ivana Troppová.

Together they tested the influence of pressure, temperature and type of acidic environment on the physico-chemical properties of synthesized carbonaceous quantum dots, which are to further serve as a transporter of biomolecules such as RNA for mosquito control. In the field of microwave pyrolysis, when mainly coal-based sorbents from banana waste were prepared, colleagues from Peru cooperated in the laboratory with Dr. Zuzana Jankovská and Dr. Michal Vaštyl, who helped them not only with the correct performance of pyrolysis experiments, but also with the analysis of output gaseous pyrolytic products containing a considerable amount of hydrogen.

Prepared biochar-based sorbents will be tested for sorption of heavy metals and pharmaceuticals from real drinking water samples in Peru.

We have developed a new reactor for waste biomass treatment

A pilot plant rotary bioreactor designed for the verification of aerobic and anaerobic biological processes of biomass conversion for both, wet and dry processes was developed within the project of Technology Agency of the Czech Republic EPSILON 3 No. TH03020064. The 10m3 chamber bioreactor is now being used for testing of batch aerobic fermentation or composting of biowaste from urban greenery maintenance, such as grass matter, trimming of flowers, shrubs and trees, etc. The pilot plant unit will also be possible to use for batch biogas production by dry fermentation of biowaste from urban greenery maintenance, agriculture or food production. Semi-automatic dosing and removal systems are being developed, these systems will allow the reactor to be used even for semi-continuous processes, especially for biogas production by wet co-fermentation, for example, slurry with phytomas or biowaste. The reactor will also be possible to use in wastewater treatment plants, for example, for thermophilic aerobic stabilization of excess sludge. The manufacturer of the equipment assumes piece production of the reactor, while the size and equipment of the device will be adjusted according to the requirements of the specific customer. The equipment prototype should be tested by the end of 2020.

Art and Science 2018

We have prepared a stand themed “Life-giving water” for this year of Art and Science. Thus all of our experiments and activities were related to what is happening in the water. For the youngest, an art spree with painting on the water surface was prepared. Kids created abstract patterns on photo paper or used colors to decorate the original floating garden. High school students determined the pH of unknown liquids using an aqueous solution of plant dyes. Both children and adults could play with light microscope, samples for them were found in the aquarium - microorganisms, mollusks, larvae or plant parts. The main attraction was the demonstration of a modern approach in agriculture - an aquaponic system of connecting fish farming with plant cultivation. You could see both representatives of the water kingdom in the form of carps and several species of plants with a root system floating in the water.
