Centre for Energy and Environmental Technologies

The Centre for Energy and Environmental Technologies (CEET) is a university institute of VSB – Technical University of Ostrava. It was established on 1 January 2021 through the merger of four university research institutes: the Nanotechnology Centre (CNT), the Energy Research Centre (ERC), the ENET Centre (CENET), and the Institute of Environmental Technology (IET).

In its very first year of operation, CEET firmly established its position within the organisational structure of VSB-TUO. Accounting for more than 25% of the University’s research output, it became one of its most important research units.

Our vision is to build a recognised research centre focused on the development of technologies and materials for low-carbon and sustainable energy, in line with the principles of the circular economy.

The common theme underpinning our activities is the energy transition – a challenge that affects many areas of our lives, from transport and industry to the environment.

Through research and development, we aim to deliver advanced technologies and methods that will help the Czech Republic successfully manage and complete its energy transition, moving away from fossil fuels towards clean energy. Another important objective is to strengthen energy self-sufficiency and reduce dependence on raw materials from countries with unstable geopolitical environments. In practice, the implementation of these principles must take into account technological capabilities, economic expectations, and policy measures.

CEET’s scientific teams bring together more than 200 researchers engaged in basic, oriented basic, and applied research. This enables us to address energy-related challenges comprehensively. Like researchers around the world, we are seeking zero-emission energy sources while ensuring that the proposed solutions do not generate additional waste.

We also focus on reducing existing pollutants in waste gases, ambient air, and water. Hydrogen is one of the key resources at the centre of our research and development activities. Among other applications, we aim to use hydrogen to support greater energy self-sufficiency and raw-material independence in selected regions.

Vision

CEET aims to become a recognised university institute of VSB-TUO focused on the development of new technologies and materials for low-carbon and sustainable energy and environmental technologies, in line with the principles of the circular economy. It is open to collaboration on both current and strategic projects at national and international level.

Mission

CEET is a university institute of VSB – Technical University of Ostrava focused on research and development in low-carbon and sustainable energy and environmental technologies, in line with the principles of the circular economy. It provides access to its unique laboratory infrastructure and highly qualified experts for research, development, and the education of students at all levels of study. CEET is open to collaboration with partners from the public sector and industry, as well as with universities and research organisations at both national and international level.

Strategy

All CEET activities are coordinated to address priorities ranging from the regional to the international level, in alignment with relevant strategic documents and with a strong emphasis on cooperation between research organisations and the application sector.

Our Values

Courage to Innovate

Curiosity and the drive to push boundaries beyond the current state of knowledge are an integral part of who we are. We are a living laboratory where we develop new knowledge, investigate it and validate it for practical application. We have the courage to seek unconventional solutions to both current and future challenges.

Excellence through Quality

We strive for excellence in everything we do and focus on areas in which we can achieve the highest standards. For us, quality is not only a goal, but also an integral part of the way we work. We aim to deliver the greatest possible value to our students, employees and partners. We promote diversity and accessibility.

Stronger Together

The diversity of our teams is one of our centre’s key strengths. Teamwork and a sense of belonging, built on mutual respect and openness, are what bring our centre together as a unique organisation. We expect one another to uphold high standards of moral and ethical conduct.

A Sense of Responsibility

We see ourselves as an integral part of wider society. We aim to set an example of responsible behaviour and to make a positive impact on the world around us. We believe in the transformative power of knowledge and awareness.

Support and Stability

We provide a strong foundation for our employees and students and are a reliable partner. We create a stable and safe environment for personal and professional development, where innovative ideas can emerge and grow. Practice-oriented education has become an integral part of our working culture.
