Research and development

The staff of the Energy Research Center focus on a wide range of specialized topics that are broadly related to energy transformation, its utilization, and its impact on the environment.

Energy audits and studies

We routinely prepare Energy Performance Certificates for Buildings (PENB) in accordance with Decree No. 78/2013 Coll.

Design and Engineering

Design and engineering is one of the main activities of the ENERGY SERVICES group. We focus on design activities in the energy sector and are capable of providing comprehensive design services from pre-project preparation, through the development of all project stages including engineering activities, to the execution of authorial and technical supervision of energy units and systems.

Monitoring of renewable energy sources

In 2010, a dispatch workplace for monitoring photovoltaic power plants was built at the Energy Research Center. The dispatch center provides our customers with year-round supervision of power plants, enabling the detection of fault conditions, the organization of service interventions, and the reporting of power plant operations. Our customers include owners of solar parks utilizing various technologies.

Energy monitoring and optimization

The ENERGOGUARD system was developed based on the long-term experience of our energy auditors, who prepare energy audits and techno-economic studies for both large and small entities.

Operational measurement in the energy sector

VEC is an authorized and accredited laboratory in the field of measuring pollutant emissions from energy and technological sources. This primarily involves the concentrations of gaseous and solid emissions in waste gases, including air-handling and reference variables of the waste gas. The Energy Research Center is therefore the holder of two certificates.

Safety of fuels and technologies

Since the beginning of the systematic scientific study of gas and dust dispersion explosions, devices with a volume of up to 20 liters have been used to determine explosion parameters, and the explosion parameters have been determined under standard test conditions.

Modern heating systems

For the needs of research, development, and type testing in the field of thermal energy equipment intended primarily for indoor heating, the Energy Research Center has built a modern testing laboratory (test facility). The test facility meets the strictest requirements for testing boilers, stoves, fireplace inserts, and other similar thermal equipment. It is constantly being expanded and supplemented with new instrumentation, which allows us to increase the range of tested equipment.

Educational show SMOKEMAN ZASAHUJE (SMOKEMAN IN ACTION)

The educational show is intended for both children and adults and offers a variety of interesting facts. The aim of the show is to introduce the general public to the principles of proper combustion in local heating systems. The public can learn how to independently determine the efficiency of their home combustion devices, as well as what most significantly influences the emissions coming from their chimneys.

Research and Development in Energy for Industrial Practice

VEC incorporates an accredited testing laboratory for measuring thermal-technical quantities, pollutant emissions (including continuous mercury concentration measurement), and evaluating the operational parameters of energy technologies.

Key focus areas include improving the technical level of energy equipment, utilizing alternative fuels, renewable energy sources (RES), and waste energy, ensuring safety in the energy sector and industry, advancing hydrogen energy, and fostering close collaboration with industrial partners.

History of the Center

The Energy Research Centre (VEC) at VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava is a specialized workplace engaged in research and development (R&D) activities primarily in the field of energy. From 2002 to 2020, VEC operated as an independent university institute. Since 2021, it has been an integral part of the Center for Energy and Environmental Technologies (CEET).

One of the core operating principles of VEC is the systematic building of partnerships with enterprises and the execution of research activities tailored to the needs of industrial practice.
