Research and Development for Sustainable Energy

We conduct research and development focused on transforming input materials, particularly waste and alternative fuels, into usable forms of energy and on their subsequent efficient utilisation. Our objective is to develop renewable energy technologies with minimal adverse environmental impacts. This includes new technologies for the transport and processing of energy feedstocks, their efficient conversion into energy, and advanced solutions for electrical and thermal energy microgrids incorporating energy storage.

We have unique laboratory facilities and highly qualified experts working on the development of a safe and reliable energy platform designed to strengthen the energy self-sufficiency and raw-material independence of regions and, potentially, entire countries. Our approach combines the efficient use of waste resources, the maximum possible integration of local renewable energy sources, energy storage technologies, and intelligent energy-flow management using advanced artificial intelligence methods. These activities are pursued in close alignment with national and EU energy strategies and with the support of Industry 4.0 technologies.

The ENET Centre also addresses priorities defined under the Horizon 2020 programme and develops projects focused on emerging renewable energy and energy storage technologies, Smart Grids and Smart Cities.

History of the Centre

The aim of the original ENET project was to establish the CENET University Institute – Centre for Energy Utilisation of Non-Traditional Energy Sources, focused on the research and development of integrated technologies and machinery for compact energy units. This included new technologies for the transport and processing of energy feedstocks, their efficient conversion into energy, and subsequent connection to the energy grid. All stages of processing and conversion were complemented by technologies for the treatment and purification of products, emissions and waste streams. The intended outcome was a user-configurable and scalable technological system capable of accommodating different types of inputs and outputs.

The implementation of the project contributed to a qualitatively new approach to related educational programmes at VSB-TUO and brought together research teams from four faculties of VSB-TUO and the Nanotechnology Centre. The ENET project subsequently led to the establishment of a modern European research centre with an interdisciplinary structure, focused on both basic and applied research into the efficient use of energy.
