UNIFORM APPROACH TO THE AIR POLLUTION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR FUNCTIONAL URBAN AREAS IN TRITIA REGION

Summary
The project aims to establish international cooperation in solving of air pollution and noise pollution, and to improve
the quality of life of citizens in European grouping of territorial cooperation TRITIA (TRITIA) area, positively affecting
their health.
The project will be realized on three spatial levels: 1st the entire area of TRITIA; 2nd the area of interest –the most
polluted area; and 3rd selected functional urban areas (FUAs). FUAs with different characteristics of air pollution will
be selected in each country (Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland). The city of Rybnik in Poland (emissions from the
energy sector and domestic boilers), Ostrava in the Czech Republic (influence of heavy industry) and Žilina in Slovakia
(influence of transport) are expected to be chosen. Also, FUAs with cleaner air will be chosen (Opava, Opole).
Information about air pollution, transport and noise pollution will be processed and universal procedures for the
management of air quality and noise will be created.
Common strategy for air quality management in TRITIA region and five specific strategies for selected FUAs (Žilina,
Ostrava, Opava, Opole, Rybnik) will be the outcomes of the project.
The project is innovative particularly in these aspects:
1) The problems of pollution in the region are solved internationally, irrespective of national borders.
2) These problems are addressed comprehensively. That means, that along with the technical aspects, health impact,
socio-economic impacts and potential impact on national legislation of participating countries are dealt with.
The entire system of strategic air quality management developed in the project will be transferable to any region of
Central Europe. It will be suitable in areas, where it will be necessary to solve a complex emission situation with
international implications.
