Research Laboratory Description

The laboratory is dedicated to pioneering research in the field of electron beam (EBEAM) precision manufacturing. We focus on bringing about fundamental changes in nanoscale materials manufacturing using state-of-the-art electron microscopy techniques, such as SEM and TEM. We strive to develop advanced in situ control and monitoring systems, thereby pushing the boundaries of additive manufacturing at the atomic and nanometre scale. Our goal is to understand the fundamental science behind this emerging technology. With a strong emphasis on applications, we explore the synthesis of 2D materials and precisely engineered materials for various fields, including electronics, renewable energy, catalysis, and more.

Objectives and Focus

The laboratory focuses on fulfilling the core objectives of the EBEAM project through the development of innovative approaches to the precision manufacturing of materials at the nanometric and atomic scales, including advanced additive manufacturing technologies. By introducing new methods in material synthesis and the fabrication of devices at the atomic level, the centre aims to enable the creation of novel materials and devices with unique functionalities. Its research supports progress in breakthrough micro- and nanoprocess engineering, paving the way for transformative applications in technology, energy, healthcare, and other significant sectors.

Main techniques

The EBEAM Laboratory focuses on the research and characterisation of advanced materials using electron beam-based methods:

  • advanced electron beam-based microscopy methods

  • spectroscopy and surface characterisation
  • artificial intelligence and advanced instrumentation

Results and Objectives

The EBEAM Laboratory has achieved significant progress in electron beam-based nanofabrication and the research of advanced materials. Key results include the successful development of electron beam-based methods for the production and modification of graphene and other low-dimensional carbon-based materials, alongside electron-induced controlled transformations in polymer and hybrid thin films.

The laboratory has advanced nanoscale characterisation through the integration of high-resolution microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, enabling precise correlation between electron beam processing and the resulting material properties. Researchers at the EBEAM centre have also contributed to the development of correlative and in situ analytical methodologies, AI-supported SEM stabilisation strategies, and concepts for nanosensors based on nanostructured materials.

These achievements strengthen the laboratory’s position as an emerging centre of excellence in the field of precision nanofabrication and advanced electron beam technologies. The full portfolio of publications and research outputs is available on the laboratory's website.
