Study of magneto-optically active materials and materials with large spin Hall effect for use in THz spectroscopy

Summary
The aim of this project is the study of magnetic materials and Heusler alloys from the first principles and their comparison with experiments. The WIEN2k code will be used for ab-initio calculations of the electronic structure, and the IT4Innovations infrastructure will also be used for more complex structures. From the electronic structure the permittivity tensor will be calculated that contains information about the linear and quadratic magneto-optical Kerr effect. These results will then be compared with experiments that have been or will be performed on iron and several Heusler alloys. Another subject of the project are sources of THz radiation using heavy metals with a large spin-Hall effect. These spintronic terahertz emitters exceed traditional THz sources of radiation especially in their spectral properties and are currently the subject of intensive research. These emitters are based on the spin-Hall effect, a relativistic phenomenon in materials with a large spin-orbit interaction. It consists of a ferromagnetic layer in which a spin polarized current is induced by a femtosecond laser. This current then enters the non-ferromagnetic heavy metal, where it is converted to a transverse charge current that leads to emission of terahertz radiation. The properties of the emitter depend on the materials used and the multilayer geometry. The aim will therefore be to design such a structure.
