Title
X-ray magnetic linear dichroism at 3p edges, first principle calculations and experimental investigations
Code
7AMB13DE004
Summary
The main idea of this project is to established a reliable ab-initio description of x-ray linear dichroism at semicore 3p edges of the transition ferromagnetic metals. The x-ray absorption, circular and linear dichroism of the 2p edges is known and to high extent its spectral shape and peak positions are explained using band-structure codes. The investigations of the 3p edges with respect to the circular and polarized light is still in its infancy. The complications mainly arises from two facts. At first the spin-orbit interaction of the 3p states are of the same order of magnitude as the valence exchange splitting. At second, semicore states (3p edges) have already a k-wave-vector dependence with respect to the 2p states (2p edges). Here we will measure as well as find the best band-structure methodology for appropriate description of the x-ray linear dichroism for the 3p edges with respect to the orientation of the crystal and magnetization axis (magneto-crystalline anisotropy). The ab-initio calculations will employ the single-electron framework of density functional theory as well as more sophisticated methodology that goes have a more accurate description of the hole-electron quasiparticle. The direct comparison with experiment is needed for future calculations and predictions of magneto-optical phenomena of transition metals and alloys.
