Title
Clay minerals as matrices for functionalized nanostructures
Code
GA205/08/0869
Summary
Surface and interlayer space of layered structures of cationic and anionic clays will be modified to create functional nanostructures usable as catalysts, photocatalysts, magnetic carriers and magnetic contrast agents, antibacterial agents and photofunctional material for optical devices. Ionic guest species, polar organic molecules, metallorganic complexes, nanoparticles of metals, metal oxides and metal sulfides will be used for modification of clay host structures. The modification will be carried out by intercalation and/or surface modification. The key problem in design of new functional nanostructures based on modified clays is the search for the optimal combination of host matrix and guest species resulting in desirable properties. Solving this problem we will use molecular modeling as the proper complementary tool to technology and nalytics. Strategy will be based on the study of host-guest interactions, understanding of structure-properties relationship and close cooperation of technology, properties testing and computer aided design using molecular modeling.
