Magnetofotonic interactions in real nanostructures

Summary
Fundamental studies of nanostructures based on ferromagnetic metals and oxides using magnetooptic (MO) magnetometry, spectral ellipsometry and MO spectroscopy form the subject of the project. The focus is on the changes induced by the enhanced role of interfaces in nanomaterials compared to their
bulk counterparts. The results are explained with macroscopic (transfer matrix, effective medium theory,scattering at nanoparticles) and microscopic models. The approach is employed in the metrology of 1D and 2D magnetic nanostructures and magnetophotonic crystals and finds uses in the studies of new recording media, spin electronics, MO sensors including those exploiting surface plasmons, and may be useful for the classification of coated magnetic nanoparticles used in medicine diagnostics, localized tissue heating and drug delivery. The project supports the collaboration with universities in USA,
Canada, Japan, France, India, Poland and Germany, multidisciplinary training of young scientists and teaching in Optics and Nanotechnology. The results will be published in refereed journals.
